Boron Carbide for Armor

Boron Carbide for Armor is a high-performance abrasive material with chemical and physical properties similar to diamonds, such as chemical resistance and hardness. Boron carbide’s extra hardness gives it the nickname “Black Diamond” (It ranks third after diamond and boron nitride). Boron carbide fibers and fiber composites may manufacture ballistic materials for protective, durable, and lightweight body armor. The distinct characteristics of advanced boron carbide materials made from boon carbide ceramic fibers, light, high hardness, wear, and corrosion-resistant–offer advantages over conventional materials such as plastics and metals. The carbide ceramic is used in tank armor and bulletproof vests.

Production Process of Boron Carbide for Armor

The synthesis of boron carbide follows the principle of the Acheson process. Electric energy is introduced in an electric arc furnace or a resistance-heated furnace to drain the strongly endothermic reaction. It must be reached about 2500 °C to achieve a satisfying yield of boron carbide. The starting materials are boron oxide, and petroleum coke converted into boron carbide and carbon monoxide. Finally, the recovered boron carbide is ground to powder. If finer crystals in the range of 0.1 to 1.5 microns are required, the addition of magnesium, which is removed afterward in the form of magnesium oxide.
